Installation Step by Step
In this tutorial we are going to see, how to install the operating system Ubuntu 8.10 (the latest Ubuntu version), going through the installation step by step from the very beginning to the end…
WARNING: Following this tutorial step by step, all files on the hard drive, on which the installation will be realized, are going to be deleted.
The first thing we need to know... What is Ubuntu?
Ubuntu is a GNU/ Linux- Distribution that provides us a computer operating system for personal computers and servers. It’s one of the most famous GNU/Linux-Distributions worldwide.
Ubuntu emphasizes on easy handling of the computer and was created to be an operating system that should be available for anybody and everywhere in the world. It also helped changing the bad image that Linux had a few years ago, when Linux was generally seen as a complicated and hard to use, operating system.
I suggest, trying Ubuntu (this GNU/Linux-Distribution), and you’ll see, its lot more easy to use, than you’re thinking right now…
Being available for anybody and everywhere in the world, means that Ubuntu keeps being free for all users. And that’s why we can download the CD we’ll need for the installation for free from the Ubuntu website. (download Ubuntu 8.10)
Here‘s where we start our tutorial...
Once we’ve downloaded the image of the Ubuntu 8.10 (Desktop Edition) installation CD (in .iso format), we’re going to burn the installation CD. For burning the CD, you should use the program you’re familiarized with, and you habitually use to burn CDs. (One example could be “Nero, burning Rom” )
When we finish burning the CD, we’re ready to start the installation...
Remeber, this tutorial explains how to install Ubuntu 8.10 in a computer, where no other operating system (for example Windows) is installed yet.
To install Ubuntu on a computer with another operating system installed, please look at the following tutorial
-
OK… now we are ready to start…
You’ll have to start your computer with the installation CD we just burned in the CD drive. The computer will boot using the CD information. The first screen you’ll see will be a table, similar as the one you see below…

Using the arrow-keys we choose our favorite language, in this case “English”, and than confirm our decision with “Enter”.
After confirming our language, we’ll see the next picture on our screen…

We’ll choose “Install Ubuntu” and validate our decision with “enter” again…
Now we’ll have to wait a few second, while we can familiarize with the logo of our new operating system…
After waiting a while there’ll appear a table on our screen, where we are asked to confirm our favorite language again...

In this case that would be “English” again.
To go on with the installation, we click on “Forward”…
In the next Step we’ll see a Map, where we should configure our time-tone, dependent on our location…
In my case I’ll choose New York. You should choose a location that corresponds on your time-zone. Important to know, that the locations are sorted by continents.

Once we’ve confirmed our time-zone, its time to realize the keyboard layout…

Usually all keyboards are standardized for continents or countries. So normally choosing the keyboard‘s country of purchase, you´ll take the right choose. But as there are always some exceptions, I’d like to remark that some imported notebooks or keyboards, can posses a different keyboard layout, so you’ll better check some of the following keys, to be in the right position, tipping them into the box, you see at the below the country-list.
Y Z . - ! ? ; : { } ( )
Once we confirmed the keyboard layout, we’ll go on to the next step, the preparation of our hard disk…
As we are installing Ubuntu 8.10 as principal and only operating system, we’ll leave the configuration as they are set automatically, so Ubuntu uses the entire disk space (100%), shown in the next image…

Going on to the next step… we´re asked for our Name, user name and password we´ll need to login every time we start the computer and the name of our computer…

Like we did previously, we confirm our data clicking on “forward”….
In the next window, Ubuntu will resume our data… which we bear out clicking on “install”…

The installation process will initiate… and in your screen you’ll see something similar as you can see in the following image…

This process is going to take a while... so if you want to, you can go for something to drink or get yourself a pizza ordered
When the installation is finished, Ubuntu will ask you to restart your computer… but first thing we’ll have to do is taking out the installation CD of our CD drive, so Ubuntu can initiate from our hard drive, where we just finished installing it…

After the restart... you’ll just have to login, using you user name and your password you choosed a few minutes ago…
That’s it...
Now you can beginn to explore Ubuntu and get to know the functions of your new operating system, the new design and features that you didn’t know before…
As I told you a few minutes ago… you’ll see, Ubuntu/GNU/Linux is much easier to use and intuitively to handle than you thought…
